Conservation students at the re:pair Festival 2025

With ‘Paradise lost’ and ‘Our second skin’, the re:pair Festival from 13 to 31 October 2025 is dedicated to our relationship with nature and the topic of fashion.

As in previous years, the conservation department of the Angewandte is once again taking part. Students from the department will be demonstrating and explaining the techniques used to preserve and restore historical textiles at the festival centre Atelier Augarten.

Student*innen der Restaurierung beim re:pair Festival 2025

Mit „Paradise lost“ und „Unsere Zweite Haut“ widmet sich das re:pair Festival von 13. bis 31. Oktober 2025 unserem Verhältnis zur Natur sowie dem Thema Fashion.

Wie auch in den vergangenen Jahren ist die Restaurierung der Angewandten wieder mit dabei. Student*innen des Instituts zeigen und erläutern in der Festivalzentrale Atelier Augarten, mit welchen Techniken historische Textilien erhalten und restauriert werden können.

A Conservation Management Plan for the large cashier’s hall in the PSK

Starting this spring, an interdisciplinary team involving the Institute of Conservation and the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab will be working on a conservation management plan for the large cashier’s hall in the listed Postsparkasse. The plan is intended to help make decisions for the space and its forms of use. The needs of the users and the building fabric will be considered equally. In preparation, teachers and conservation students are currently working on a comprehensive inventory and condition survey and are conducting interviews and surveys with users.

Ein Conservation Management Plan für den Großen Kassasaal in der PSK

Ab dem heurigen Frühjahr arbeitet ein interdisziplinäres Team mit Beteiligung des Instituts für Konservierung und Restaurierung und des Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab an der Erstellung eines Conservation Management Plans für den Großen Kassasaal in der denkmalgeschützten Postsparkasse. Der Plan soll helfen, Entscheidungen für die Räumlichkeit und deren Nutzungsformen zu treffen. Bedürfnisse der Nutzer*innen und der Gebäudesubstanz werden dabei gleichermaßen berücksichtigt. Als Vorbereitung arbeiten Lehrende und Studierende der Restaurierung gerade an einer umfassende Bestands- und Zustandsaufnahme und führen Interviews und Umfragen mit den Nutzer*innen durch.

STECCI Condition Assessment in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina

In September 2024, an eight-member team from WP3 conducted condition assessments at four Stećci sites across Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia. The team included Katharina Fuchs, Marija Milchin, Gabriela Krist and Farkas Pintér (from UAA), along with Siniša Bizjak, Krešimir Bosnić, and Miona Miliša (UMAS), and Migueli Chedrewih (IMT). This was the second site assessment trip carried out under Task 3.3 of the project, focused on evaluating monuments in Stećci countries.

During the trip, four distinct sites were evaluated. The first day was dedicated to assessing displaced Stećci currently displayed in front of the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split. In the following days, the team examined the sites at Cista Velika (HR), Radimlja (BiH), and Ravanjska Vrata (BiH). Each of these sites is situated in a fairly remote area with unique environmental conditions, contributing to distinctive decay patterns and deterioration mechanisms. To better understand the decay processes, the team employed various methods, including visual inspections, in-situ testing, and detailed mapping of decay and damage patterns, which helped to capture and analyze the on-site conditions.

The trip was organized with the support of colleagues from the University of Split, Arts Academy (UMAS) and University of Sarajevo (UNSA). Special thanks to Siniša Bizjak, Krešimir Bosnić, Miona Miliša, and Nusret Drešković for their local insights, hospitality, and assistance with transportation, food, and refreshments.

STECCI Condition Assessment in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina

Im September 2024 führte ein achtköpfiges Team von WP3 Zustandsbewertungen an vier Stećci-Standorten in Bosnien und Herzegowina und Kroatien durch. Zu dem Team gehörten Katharina Fuchs, Marija Milchin, Gabriela Krist und Farkas Pintér (UAA), sowie Siniša Bizjak, Krešimir Bosnić und Miona Miliša (UMAS) und Migueli Chedrewih (IMT).

Während der Reise wurden vier verschiedene Standorte begutachtet. Der erste Tag war der Begutachtung der translozierten Stećci gewidmet, die derzeit vor dem Museum für kroatische archäologische Denkmäler in Split ausgestellt sind. In den folgenden Tagen untersuchte das Team die Fundstätten in Cista Velika (HR), Radimlja (BiH) und Ravanjska Vrata (BiH). Jede dieser Stätten befindet sich in einem relativ abgelegenen Gebiet mit einzigartigen Umweltbedingungen, die zu unterschiedlichen Zerfallsmustern und Verfallsmechanismen beitragen. Um die Zerfallsprozesse besser zu verstehen, wandte das Team verschiedene Methoden an, darunter visuelle Inspektionen, In-situ-Tests und detaillierte Kartierungen von Zerfalls- und Schadensmustern, mit deren Hilfe die Bedingungen vor Ort erfasst und analysiert werden konnten.

Die Reise wurde mit Unterstützung von Kollegen der Universität Split, Kunstakademie (UMAS) und der Universität Sarajevo (UNSA) organisiert. Besonderer Dank gilt Siniša Bizjak, Krešimir Bosnić, Miona Miliša und Nusret Drešković für ihre Einblicke in die örtlichen Gegebenheiten, ihre Gastfreundschaft und ihre Unterstützung bei Transport, Verpflegung und Betreuung.

STECCI Condition Assessment on Site Caen, France

A five-member team from WP3, including Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), Farkas Pintér (UAA), Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK), and Vincent Thiery (IMT), conducted the final condition assessment for Task 3.1 at the Cimetière Saint Jean in Caen in July/August 2024.

The Cimetière Saint Jean is a small historical cemetery with a few dozen 19th-century graves and crypts, primarily made of porous Caen stone. Now a park in the city center, it has been neglected for a century, resulting in poor preservation of most graves.

The assessment focused on two objects—a small crypt and a gravestone—both made of Caen stone. The team conducted visual inspections and a range of in-situ tests, including contact sponge, Karsten tube, brush test, gloss and color measurements, and ultrasonic velocity. Digital mapping and RTI photography were used to capture the on-site conditions. With Vincent Thiery’s assistance, the team also explored the Normandy region (Caen, Arromanches-les-Bains, Rouen) to gain further insights into the historical use and weathering of Caen stone.

Ein fünfköpfiges Team aus WP3, darunter Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), Farkas Pintér (UAA), Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK) und Vincent Thiery (IMT), führte im Juli/August 2024 die abschließende Zustandsbewertung für Aufgabe 3.1 auf dem Cimetière Saint Jean in Caen durch.

Der Cimetière Saint Jean ist ein kleiner historischer Friedhof mit einigen Dutzend Gräbern aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, die hauptsächlich aus porösem Caen-Stein bestehen. Er ist heute ein Park im Stadtzentrum und wurde ein Jahrhundert lang vernachlässigt, was zu einem schlechten Erhaltungszustand der meisten Gräber führte.

Die Bewertung konzentrierte sich auf zwei Objekte – eine kleine Krypta und einen Grabstein -, die beide aus Caen-Stein bestehen. Das Team führte visuelle Inspektionen und eine Reihe von In-situ-Tests durch, darunter Kontaktschwamm, Karsten-Rohr, Bürstentest, Glanz- und Farbmessungen sowie Ultraschallgeschwindigkeit. Digitale Kartierungen und RTI-Fotografie wurden eingesetzt, um die Bedingungen vor Ort zu erfassen. Mit der Unterstützung von Vincent Thiery erkundete das Team auch die Region Normandie (Caen, Arromanches-les-Bains, Rouen), um weitere Einblicke in die historische Nutzung und Verwitterung des Steins von Caen zu gewinnen.

Conservation and exhibition in the Votive Church

The Votive Church, an early masterpiece of architect Heinrich Ferstel, is considered the initial building of the Vienna Ring Road and a total work of art in neogothic style. The architecture as well as the liturgical equipment of the church display the excellence of craftmanship in the second half of the 19th century and give many examples of the virtuous handling of different materials and techniques.
In the course of separate tours participants have the chance to get an insight into the conservation and restoration of selected objects conducted by the institute. There will also be the possibility of visiting the museum as well as the newly established depots, both curated and planned by the institute.

All tours are fully booked.

Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung lädt zum Tag des Denkmals!

Restaurierung und Ausstellung in der Votivkirche.

Die Votivkirche, ein frühes Hauptwerk des Architekten Heinrich Ferstel, gilt als Initialbau der Ringstraßenarchitektur, ein historistisches Gesamtkunstwerk in neogotischem Stil. Architektur und liturgische Einrichtung des Sakralbaus präsentieren sich als Leistungsschau des Kunsthandwerks der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und vermitteln den virtuosen Umgang mit verschiedenen Materialien und Bearbeitungstechniken während der Gründerzeit.
Im Rahmen zweier Führungen werden den Teilnehmenden ausgewählte Objekte des Interieurs und deren Konservierung und Restaurierung vorgestellt. Es besteht außerdem die Möglichkeit, die vom Institut kuratierte Ausstellung im Museum der Kirche, sowie die beiden neu eingerichteten Depots zu besichtigen.

Alle Führungen sind ausgebucht.

Martina Griesser-Stermscheg becomes the new Professor of Conservation and Restoration and takes over as Head of the Institute on 1 October 2024

The Institute of Conservation connects past, present and future and links knowledge and practices and practices from the arts and sciences. “I am looking forward to the collaboration with students, lecturers, graduates and many project partners project partners in a field of work that I can’t imagine being more exciting, more exciting, fascinating and diverse,” says the future Professor in her first statement.

Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung verbindet Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft und verknüpft Wissensbestände und Praktiken aus den Künsten und den Wissenschaften. „Ich freue mich auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Studierenden, Lehrenden, Absolvent*innen und vielen Projektpartner*innen in einem Arbeitsfeld, das ich mir spannender, faszinierender und vielfältiger nicht vorstellen kann“, so die künftige Angewandte-Professorin in ihrem ersten Statement.

STECCI Condition Assessment on Site Kleinbardorf and Unsleben, Germany

In the frame of Task 3.1 the third condition assessment was carried out by a five-member team from WP3 at the Jewish cemeteries in Kleinbardorf and Unsleben in Franconia, Germany, in June 2024. The team consisted of Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), Farkas Pintér (UAA), Stefan Simon (SPK), and Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK).
The cemetery in Kleinbardorf contains of around 3,500 graves and gravestones, some dating back to the 16th century; the last funeral dated to 1938. The cemetery in Unsleben is much smaller and also presents a more compact history of use, with most of the graves originating from the 19th century. The predominant stone used was a local siliceous sandstone, however, a few limestone and marble objects were also identified and used for the detailed condition assessment for the STECCI Project.The condition assessment included visual inspection and a range of in-situ tests, such as contact sponge and Karsten tube tests for water absorption, brush test for surface material loss, gloss and color measurements, ultrasonic velocity, etc. Digital mapping of decay and damage patterns, as well as RTI photography, were used to visually capture the situation on-site.

STECCI-Bestandsaufnahme am Standort Kleinbardorf und Unsleben, Deutschland

Im Rahmen von Task 3.1 wurde die dritte Bestands- und Zustandsaufnahme von einem fünfköpfigen Team aus WP3 auf den jüdischen Friedhöfen in Kleinbardorf und Unsleben in Franken, Deutschland, im Juni 2024 durchgeführt. Das Team bestand aus Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), Farkas Pintér (UAA), Stefan Simon (SPK), und Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK).

Der Friedhof in Kleinbardorf umfasst rund 3.500 Gräber und Grabsteine, die teilweise bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückreichen; die letzte Beisetzung datiert aus dem Jahr 1938. Der Friedhof in Unsleben ist wesentlich kleiner und weist auch eine kompaktere Nutzungsgeschichte auf, wobei die meisten Gräber aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammen. Das vorherrschende Gestein war ein lokaler silikatischer Sandstein, es wurden jedoch auch einige Objekte aus Kalkstein und Marmor identifiziert und für die detaillierte Bewertung im Rahmen des STECCI-Projekts herangezogen. Die Zustandsbewertung umfasste eine visuelle Inspektion und eine Reihe von In-situ-Tests, wie z. B. Contact sponge und Karstensches Prüfröhrchen für die Wasseraufnahme, brush tests für den Oberflächenabtrag, Glanz- und Farbmessungen, Ultraschallgeschwindigkeitsmessungen usw. Digitale Kartierungen von Schadensbildern sowie RTI-Fotografie wurden eingesetzt, um die Situation vor Ort visuell zu erfassen.

International Conservation Summer School in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Hosted by Mongolian National University of Art and Culture from July 4–14, 2024, the International Conservation Summer School in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia was joined by students and teaching staff from IoC and partner universities – Angewandte, Northwest University, China, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, India and Silpakorn University International College, Thailand. Supported by Eurasia Pacific Uninet, the summer school has given an insight into cultural heritage, technology and conservation in Mongolia.

Institute of Conservation supports Museums in Albania

The Ethnographic Museum in Kruja was recently reopened by the Albanian Minister of Culture. IoC has worked there on the preparation of objects for the new display for 2 years. Another ongoing project in Albania under the umbrella of the EU4Culture Project is the Ethnographic Museums in Kavaja: this July and August a team of senior conservators and students of IoC is preparing the collection for the new exhibition in the renovated building.

Institut für Konservierung unterstützt Museen in Albanien

Kürzlich wurde das Ethnographische Museum in Kruja vom albanischen Kulturminister wiedereröffnet. Das IoC hat dort 2 Jahre lang an der Vorbereitung von Objekten für die neue Ausstellung gearbeitet. Ein weiteres laufendes Projekt in Albanien im Rahmen des EU4Culture-Projekts ist das Ethnographische Museum in Kavaja: diesen Juli und August bereitet ein Team aus Mitarbeiter*innen und Student*innen des IoC die Sammlung für die Ausstellung in dem renovierten Museumsgebäude vor.

Angewandte Restaurierung in Schloss Loosdorf

AUSSTELLUNGSERÖFFNUNG

Die Arbeiten des Instituts für Konservierung und Restaurierung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien rund um das Scherbenzimmer werden 2024 in den Fokus gerückt. Bruchstücke, Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden im laufenden Forschungsprojekt „Broken Collection“ verbunden und Zusammenhänge sichtbar gemacht. Neben der zerbrochenen Porzellansammlung stehen auch die derzeit im Rahmen von Diplomen und Vordiplomen bearbeiteten historischen Raumausstattungen im Blickpunkt, welche im Rahmen von Schaurestaurierungen live bearbeitet werden.

STECCI Condition Assessment on Site Domus Romana, Malta

A seven-member team from WP3 visited the so-called “Domus Romana” in Malta in May 2024 for the second condition assessment within the STECCI Project. The team consisted of Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), Farkas Pintér (UAA), Siniša Bizjak (UMAS), Krešimir Bosnić (UMAS), Samir Đug (UNSA), and Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK).

The site “Domus Romana” in Rabat, Malta, consists of archaeological remains of a rich residential building from the Roman period (built in the 1st century BC) and a later layer from the 11th century AD consisting of Muslim graves; the site was reused as a cemetery during the time of the Fatimid Caliphate. The monuments are made of highly porous local limestone(s), most of which are identified as different qualities of Globigerina limestone.

The condition assessment included visual inspection and a range of in-situ tests, such as contact sponge and Karsten tube tests for the water absorption, the so-called brush test for the surface material loss, gloss and color measurements, ultrasonic velocity, etc. Digital mapping of decay and damage patterns as well as RTI photography were used to visually capture the situation on-site.

Contrary to the cold and snowy experience in Carinthia in April this year, the assessment in Malta was conducted in fairly warm, sometimes quite hot weather. Despite some minor problems resulting from the heat, all the necessary work could be completed on site in the planned time frame. Thanks to the friendly organization by our colleagues from Heritage Malta, the team also attended a conference of ICOM Malta and could have a glimpse of the digitization work at the freshly re-opened Maritime Museum of Malta.

STECCI Condition Assessment on Site Hundskirche

A four-member team from WP3 visited the so-called “Hundskirche” in Carinthia on April 18th and 19th, 2024, for the first condition assessment within the STECCI Project. The team consisted of Abdelrhman Fahmy (SPK), Katharina Fuchs (UAA), Marija Milchin (UAA), and Farkas Pinter (UAA). In the course of the STECCI Project, condition assessments on 14 sites in 8 countries are planned and divided into 2 Tasks (3.1. and 3.3).

The four condition assessments of Task 3.1 concern so-called reference sites situated outside the STECCI-regions. These sites are located in Malta, Germany, France, and the here-discussed “Hundskirche” in Austria. The “Hundskirche” is a rock formation in Carinthia (AT) that carries historically important carvings witnessing the spread of early Protestantism in the 16th century in Austria. The asset is connected to the bedrock and consists of compact dolomite.

The condition assessment encompassed visual inspection and a range of in-situ tests, such as gloss and color measurements, ultrasonic velocity, contact sponge, and Karsten tube tests. Additionally, RTI photography was used to capture detailed images of selected carvings, alongside brush-off tests. The team conducted decay and damage mapping and comprehensive mapping of all tests and analytical methods employed. Two samples were collected for further microscopical analyses.

Despite Carinthia showcasing its alpine character and greeting the team with a 15cm (!) snow cover, the condition assessment was very successful. Currently, the information gathered from the “Hundskirche” is being post-processed, and we are eagerly looking forward to the next condition assessment on Malta, where the team will be larger and the weather hopefully warmer!

Visit to the World Heritage GREAT SPA TOWN Baden bei Wien

A one-day excursion took students and employees of the institute to Baden at the end of April. Together with ten other spa towns in Europe, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Together with World Heritage Site Manager Alexandra Harrer and City Councillor Hans Hornyik, the attributes that make up the Outstanding Universal Value of this site were explored during the city walk and the challenges of preserving, managing and communicating this serial transnational heritage, the Great Spa Towns of Europe, were discussed. The excursion participants learnt more about the essential spa culture in Baden during a visit to the “freshly filled” exhibition in the Kaiserhaus.

Zu Besuch im Welterbe GREAT SPA TOWN Baden bei Wien

Eine eintägige Exkursion führte Studierende und Mitarbeiter*innen des Instituts Ende April nach Baden. Seit 2021 ist es mit zehn anderen Kurstädten in Europa Teil des UNESCO Weltkulturerbes. Gemeinsam mit der Welterbe Site Managerin Alexandra Harrer und Stadtrat Hans Hornyik wurden während dem Stadtspaziergang die Attribute, welche den Outstanding Universal Value dieser Stätte ausmachen, erkundet und über die Herausforderung bei Erhaltung, Management und Kommunikation dieses seriellen transnationalen Erbes, der Great Spa Towns of Europe, diskutiert. Mehr über die wesentliche Kurkultur in Baden erfuhren die Exkursionsteilnehmer*innen beim Besuch der „frisch befüllten“ Ausstellung im Kaiserhaus.

The day of action is intended to draw attention to the UNESCO World Heritage in Austria and create more awareness for it.

This year, our Institute and UNESCO Chair are also taking part in the varied programme at the twelve Austrian World Heritage Sites!

On the one hand with a guided tour of the sculptures in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace and on the other with a guided tour of the outside of the Parliament building (register via kons-rest@uni-ak.ac.at).

In memoriam Götz Hagmüller

We mourn the loss of our colleague Götz Hagmüller, who did so much for Nepal in his lifetime. His legacy includes numerous restoration projects in Bhaktapur, the city where he spent most of his life. He was also responsible for the revitalisation of the Garden of Dreams in Kathmandu and the transformation of the Royal Palace into the outstanding Patan Museum. Our sincere condolences go out to his family!

Wir trauern um unseren Kollegen Götz Hagmüller, der in seinem Leben so viel für Nepal geleistet hat. Sein Vermächtnis umfasst zahlreiche Restaurierprojekte in Bhaktapur, der Stadt, in der er den Großteil seines Lebens verbracht hat. Darüber hinaus war er federführend für die Revitalisierung des Garden of Dreams in Kathmandu sowie die Transformation des Königspalastes in das herausragende Patan Museum verantwortlich. Unser aufrichtig empfundenes Beileid gilt seiner Familie!

Networking Meeting of the Austrian UNESCO Chairs

Shortly before the end of the year, the chairs met at the Josephinum at the invitation of the UNESCO Commission. Following reports on recent activities, ideas for future joint projects were exchanged and opportunities for co-operation explored. There are currently 10 UNESCO Chairs in Austria and more are in preparation. Our Chair for the Conservation Preservation of Tangible Cultural Heritage has been established at the Angewandte since 2019.

Vernetzungstreffen der österreichischen UNESCO-Lehrstühle

Kurz vor Ende des Jahres trafen sich die Chairs auf Einladung der UNESCO Kommission im Josephinum. Nach Berichten zu den jüngsten Aktivitäten, wurden Ideen für zukünftige gemeinsame Projekte ausgetauscht und Kooperationsmöglichkeiten ausgelotet. Derzeit gibt es in Österreich 10 UNESCO-Lehrstühle, weiter sind in Vorbereitung. Seit 2019 ist unser Lehrstuhl für die Erhaltung von Kulturerbe an der Angewandten eingerichtet.

Die neue Rektorin der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, Dr.in Petra Schaper-Rinkel (rechts im Bild) eröffnete am 12. Oktober die Ausstellung Conservator at Work. Die Schau (13.10.-23.11.2023, Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab AIL) zeigt das breite Spektrum aktueller restauratorischer Praxis am Beispiel originaler Kunstwerke sowie Schaurestaurierungen und reflektiert 24 Jahre Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung an der Angewandten. Dessen Leiterin, Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Gabriela Krist (links im Bild), betonte in ihrer Begrüßung den Wandel hin zur universitären Professionalisierung, dem sich Restaurierung als Disziplin in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zum Vorteil des Erhalts kulturellen Erbes und der Bewältigung aktueller Herausforderungen wie der Klimakrise unterzogen hat.

Mit dieser Ausstellung hält das IoC Rückschau auf die Entwicklung der Konservierungswissenschaften und Restaurierung in den letzten 24 Jahren an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien unter der Leitung von Gabriela Krist. So wurden die bereits bestehenden Fachbereiche Objekt und Gemälde um Textil und Stein erweitert und neben der klassischen Einzelrestaurierung die präventive Konservierung und Sammlungspflege, die Kulturguterhaltung im internationalem Kontext und in Zeiten des Klimawandels in den Fokus gerückt.

Gezeigt wird ein breites Spektrum an aktuellen Projekten, wie etwa die Konservierung und Restaurierung von zeitgenössischer Kunst, Textilien, klassischen Ölgemälden, Steinobjekten, Goldschmiedearbeiten sowie historischen Gebrauchsgegenständen, die von Museen, kirchlichen Einrichtungen und der Denkmalpflege in Auftrag gegeben wurden.
Die internationale Projektarbeit in Indien, Nepal, der Mongolei, China und Albanien, in die das Institutsteam, Absolvent*innen und Studierende stets eingebunden sind, werden durch Filmbeiträge vermittelt.

Eine Reihe von konservierungswissenschaftlichen Vorträgen begleitet die Ausstellung. Vor Ort bieten Live-Restaurierungen die Gelegenheit, in Dialog zu treten und Fragen zu stellen.
So gibt „Conservator at Work“ einen Einblick, wie Restaurator*innen an der Erforschung und der Erhaltung unseres kulturellen Erbes arbeiten, wie sie untersuchen, konservieren, analysieren, entdecken, vermitteln und interdisziplinär und international agieren.

Managing and conserving our UNESCO World Heritage in a sustainable way – this complex topic is the focus of the 18th Austrian World Heritage Conference, which will take place this year from 12-13 October in Hallstatt. The Institute of Conservation, to which the UNESCO Chair has been affiliated since 2019, will participate again as in previous years in order to bring the perspective of conservation into the discussion and to further intensify the exchange with representatives and managers of the Austrian World Heritage Sites.

Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung, dem der UNESCO Lehrstuhl für die Erhaltung von Kulturerbe seit 2019 angegliedert ist, wird wie in den letzten Jahren wieder teilnehmen, um die Perspektive der Restaurierung in die Diskussion einzubringen und den Austausch mit Vertreter*innen und Manager*innen der österreichischen Welterbestätten weiter zu intensiveren.

13 years of conservation commitment in Nepal

… and it goes on!

The Institute of Conservation looks back on a busy August. For one month, a 17-member team was once again active in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Patan Durbar Square and Royal Palace. Under the direction of Prof. Krist and teachers from the Institute, students of conservation and the CHCM Joint Masters worked together with Nepalese students and local museum staff on terracotta reliefs of the Narashima Temple, the fire-gilded metal decorative elements of the Degutaleju Temple and a wall painting in Bhaktapur. At the same time, the collection care at the Patan Museum was successfully completed. After more than 13 years of engagement in Nepal, it is far from over and the Institute is working with its long-time partner, the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, to continue the campaigns in 2024!

Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung blickt auf einen arbeitsintensiven August zurück. Einen Monat lang war auch heuer wieder ein 17-köpfiges Team in der UNESCO Welterbestätte Patan Durbar Square und Royal Palace tätig. Unter der Leitung von Prof. Krist und Lehrenden des Instituts arbeiteten Studierende der Konservierung und des CHCM Joint Masters gemeinsam mit nepalesischen Studierenden und lokalem Museumspersonal an Terrakottareliefs des Narashima Tempels, den feuervergoldeten Metalldekorelementen des Degutaleju Tempels und einer Wandmalerei in Bhaktapur. Parallel konnte die Sammlungspflege im Patan Museum erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden. Nach mehr als 13 Jahren Engagement in Nepal ist noch lange nicht Schluss und das Institut bemüht sich mit seinem langjährigen Partner, dem Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, um eine Fortführung der Kampagnen 2024!

EXHIBITION PROLONGED until 27.08.2023

Due to the large number of visitors, the special exhibition of the Tyrolean State Museums, realised in cooperation with the Institute for Conservation, will be prolonged until 27 August 2023.

On an area of over 800 m², visitors can gain a comprehensive insight into the diverse fields of activity of conservation. The exhibition spans an arc from the origins of conservation science to the numerous disciplines and fields of activity of the profession to a multitude of case studies from practice.

Wegen des großen Besucher*innenandranges wird die Sonderausstellung der Tiroler Landesmuseen, realisiert in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung, bis zum 27.08.2023 verlängert.

Auf über 800 m² können die Besucher*innen einen umfassenden Einblick in die vielfältigen Tätigkeitsbereiche der Restaurierung erhalten. Die Ausstellung spannt einen Bogen von der Entstehung der Konservierungswissenschaften über die zahlreichen Fachdisziplinen und Aufgabenfelder des Berufs bis hin zu einer Vielzahl an Fallbeispielen aus der Praxis.

Cultural Heritage Protection in Climate Change online project

(CHePiCC online)

As part of the CHePiCC online project, the Institute of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna is currently producing educational videos on the topic of cultural heritage conservation and climate change. In addition, the IoC participated in other activities of the project, such as a Summer University in Trondheim, Norway in June 2022.

CHePiCC online is an EU-funded project (Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, duration 06/2021 to 05/2023) in which six institutions from all over Europe are working together in an interdisciplinary way (Project responsibility University of Continuing Education Krems).

Climate change and the resulting natural disasters represent one of the main threats to cultural heritage and landscapes in the 21st century. The project aims to create a freely accessible e-learning module focusing on the threats to movable and immovable cultural heritage caused by climate change, as well as on sustainable preparedness measures for the protection of cultural landscapes.

Im Rahmen des CHePiCC online Projekts produziert das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung der Universität für Angewandte Kunst Wien aktuell Lehrvideos zum Themengebiet Kulturguterhaltung und Klimawandel. Darüber hinaus partizipierte das IoC an weiteren Aktivitäten des Projekts, wie einer Sommeruniversität in Trondheim, Norwegen im Juni 2022.

CHePiCC online stellt ein EU-finanziertes Projekt (Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, Laufzeit 06/2021-05/2023) dar, an welchem sechs Institutionen aus ganz Europa interdisziplinär zusammenarbeiten (Projektverantwortung Universität für Weiterbildung Krems).

Der Klimawandel und die daraus resultierenden Naturkatastrophen stellen im 21. Jahrhundert einen der Hauptbedrohungsfaktoren für das kulturelle Erbe und die Kulturlandschaften dar. Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, ein frei zugängliches E-Learning-Modul zu erstellen, das sich auf die durch den Klimawandel verursachten Bedrohungen für bewegliches und unbewegliches Kulturgut, sowie auf nachhaltige Vorbereitungsmaßnahmen für den Schutz von Kulturlandschaften konzentriert.

The shard collection of Loosdorf Castle with porcelain pieces from Europe and Asia is getting into motion: 2023 is not only the year of the return of objects after an exhibition tour through Japan, but also the start of the artistic research project “Broken Collection” of the Institute of Conservation of the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Head: Gabriela Krist).
Additional to the broken pieces, the exhibition shows “reassembled” objects restored in Japan and provides insight into the research in the field of tension between the broken and the complete, preservation and destruction.

Die Scherbensammlung von Schloss Loosdorf mit wertvollen Porzellanstücken aus Europa und Asien kommt in Bewegung: 2023 ist nicht nur das Jahr der Rückkehr von Objekten nach einer Ausstellungstour durch Japan, sondern auch der Start des künstlerischen Forschungsprojekts „Broken Collection“ des Instituts für Konservierung und Restaurierung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien (Leitung: Gabriela Krist).
Die Ausstellung zeigt neben den Scherben, in Japan restaurierte „wieder zusammengesetzte“ Objekte und gibt Einblick in die Forschung im Spannungsfeld zwischen Zerbrochenem und Vollständigem, Erhaltung und Zerstörung.

After the success of first workshop on preventive conservation of textiles in pre-COVID times in 2020, the Institute of Conservation, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), India are now resuming the much-awaited follow-up. Textile conservators from the Institute of Conservation will conduct the workshop on ‘Storing Textiles – A Practical Approach’ with colleagues from IGNCA at the National Crafts Museum, New Delhi, where the focus is on evaluating the condition and requirements of various textiles, and thereby making improvements for a safe long-term storage – merging skills, knowledge and experience – from the east and the west!

Visit the Votivkirche Museum on Tag des Denkmals

As part of Tag des Denkmals on 25 September, the Institute of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, together with Reverend Joe Farrugia, invites you to an exclusive guided tour of the newly installed museum in the Votivkirche in Vienna.

In addition to magnificent liturgical utensils, stained glass designs and the late Gothic Antwerp Passion altar, which was examined and conserved as part of a diploma thesis, can be admired. The guided tour provides unique insights into the exhibition planning, conservation of the objects as well as ongoing conservation projects of the Institute in the Votivkirche.

Conservation campaign in Patan

The Institute of Conservation back in Nepal

A 14-member team of students, teachers and graduates is working with the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, the Patan Museum and students from the Lumbini Buddhist University to conserve fire-gilded temple roofs, wooden shrines and museum objects, and together they are moving a large part of the museum collection into recently renovated galleries. In addition, after a break due to the pandemic, important maintenance work is also being carried out on stone fountains and metal sculptures. The Austrian Development Agency continues to be the most important funding partner for the Nepal projects.

Ein 14-köpfiges Team aus Studierenden, Lehrenden und Absolvent*Innen arbeitet mit dem Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, dem Patan Museum und Studierenden der Lumbini Buddhist University an der Restaurierung von feuervergoldeten Tempeldächer, Holzschreinen sowie Museumsobjekten und übersiedeln gemeinsam einen Großteil der Museumssammlung in kürzlich renovierte Galerien. Daneben werden, nach pandemiebedingter Pause, auch wichtige Pflegemaßnahmen an Brunnenanlagen und Metallskulpturen durchgeführt. Die Austrian Development Agency ist nach wie vor der wichtigste Finanzierungspartner der Nepal-Projekte.

Collection Care and Conservation Workshop in Albania

Together with the University of Tirana and UNOPS

This September, teachers, students and graduates of conservation and the University of Tirana will be working in Albania for three weeks: In the ethnographic museum in Krujë, the extensive collection of costumes, textile accessories and various decorative and everyday objects will be prepared for the newly conceived exhibition and storage in the depot. In a parallel workshop in the Bashtovë fortress, basic knowledge of stone conservation and lime mortar processing is being taught to local craftsmen and specialists.

Sammlungspflege und Restaurierworkshop in Albanien

Gemeinsam mit der Universität Tirana und UNOPS

Drei Wochen sind Lehrende, Studierende und Absolvent*innen der Konservierung und Restaurierung und der Universität Tirana im heurigen September in Albanien tätig: Im ethnographischen Museum in Krujë wird die umfangreiche Sammlung an Kostümen, textilen Accessoires und verschiedenen Dekor- und Alltagsgegenständen für die neukonzipierte Ausstellung und Lagerung im Depot vorbereitet. In einem parallel stattfindenden Workshop in der Festung Bashtovë werden Grundkenntnisse der Steinrestaurierung und Kalkmörtelverarbeitung an lokale Handwerker und Fachkräfte vermittelt.

Back on track – First major conservation campaign in Patan after the pandemic

After a somewhat longer pandemic-related break in major work, a conservation campaign took place again this summer (16.8.-12.09.2022) in Patan, Nepal! The team of staff, alumni and students of conservation and the Joint Masters CHCM started with the conservation of the numerous fire-gilded metal decoration elements and pinnacles of the Degutaleju Temple. In the Patan Museum, the collection care was continued and the Tantric shrine, one of the exhibition highlights, was surveyed and treated. The wallpaintings in the Sundari Chowk, which had already been conserved in the 2010s, underwent renewed care and surface cleaning, and minor earthquake-related damage was treated.

Back on track – Erste große Restaurierkampagne in Patan nach der Pandemie

Nach einer etwas längeren Pandemie-bedingten Pause größerer Arbeitseinsätze fand im heurigen Sommer (16.8.-12.09.2022) wieder eine Restaurierkampagne in Patan, Nepal, statt! Das Team aus Mitarbeiter*innen, Alumni und Studierende der Konservierung und des Joint Masters CHCM begann mit der Restaurierung der zahlreichen feuervergoldeten Metalldekorelementen und Pinnacles des Degutaleju Tempels. Im Patan Museum wurde die Sammlungspflege fortgeführt und der Tantrische Schrein, eines der Ausstellungshighlight befundet und konservatorisch behandelt. Die bereits in den 2010er Jahren restaurierten Wandmalereien im Sundari Chowk wurden einer erneuten Pflege und Oberflächenreinigung unterzogen und kleinere erdbebenbedingte Schäden restauriert.

Summer University in Trondheim

Climate Change and Cultural Landscapes was the topic of the Summer University, held from 30 May to 3 June 2022 in the pittoresque city of Trondheim in Norway. Threats and damage potentials related to climate change for wooden warehouses, large-scale concrete bunkers from WWII and stone cathedral were discussed as well as sustainable conservation strategies.

Staff and students of the Institute of Conservation participated in this interdisciplinary, international format organized in the framework of the Erasmus+ funded project CHePiCC, in which the Institute collaborates with five other universities and research institutions all over Europe.

Start of the Joint Master’s Summer Programme

On 4 July, the summer programme started for the 13 students of the Joint Master Programme Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management! For the first time the two students groups from SUIC and Angewandte come together in Vienna! Austrian Majolica Project –
Conservation of Majolica Objects

During the winter term 2021/22, the Institute participated within the “Austrian Majolica Project” which was implemented by the MAK (Museum for Applied Arts Vienna). As part of this cooperation, seven students of the object class conserved eleven Majolica objects. In this blog article, the students tell about their discoveries, challenges and conservation measures during the restoration process.

Focus on UNESCO World Heritage in the new Joint Master CHCM

In spring 2022, the new Joint Master Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management started with 13 international students. Project and site management as well as the conservation of World Heritage are some of the focal points of the 3-semester postgraduate programme. Here, the experience and competences of the UNESO Chair as well as the good networking and (inter)national contacts can be drawn upon. At the Angewandte in Vienna as well as at the Silpakorn in Bangkok, a number of new courses will be offered that are dedicated to these topics.

Schwerpunkt UNESCO Welterbe im neuen Joint Master CHCM

Im Frühjahr 2022 startete der neue Joint Master Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management mit 13 internationalen Studierenden. Projekt- und Site Management sowie die Erhaltung von Welterbe sind einige der Schwerpunkte des 3-semestrigen postgradualen Programms. A project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) allowed interdisciplinary research on the so-called “Chinese Cabinets” and the “Porcelain Room” at Schönbrunn palace in Vienna. These interiors can be considered as excellent examples of the mid-18th century taste of the Habsburg family for East Asian room decorations.
The presentation of the research results from Schönbrunn formed an essential part of the second international conference “The Conservation of East Asian Cabinets in Imperial Residences (1700-1900)” now published in this volume. Enriched by contributions from international and interdisciplinary experts – conservators and art historians and natural scientists – the reflection of this special topic revealed remarkable findings on the manufacture, provenance and conservation history of porcelain, lacquerware, paper and textile wall hangings as integral parts of baroque interiors not only in Schönbrunn but also in related sites in Europe and other parts of the world.

From 2013 to 2016, the collections of six monasteries and regional museums in the province were brought into focus as part of the “Depotoffensive” of the province of Lower Austria. The Institute of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna served as consultant and partner for the planning and implementation. The depot, the heart of every collection, was the centre of activities. The Nako temple complex with its earliest structures dating back to the 11th century is an extraordinary testimony of early Tibetan Buddhism not anymore preserved in today’s Tibet. Endangered by the rough environment, improper treatment and frequent earthquakes, the outstanding monuments were re-discovered by scholars from Austrian universities in the 1980s. The transdisciplinary research project carried out over more than 20 years led to in-depth studies, preservation and model-like conservation of the temples and their artworks.

The reappraisal of its own (conservation) history has become a necessity for the young discipline of conservation science. After all, the evaluation of materials and methods used in the past now serves as a basis for the development of current conservation strategies in museums and in the preservation of historical monuments.

From his highly regarded scientific expeditions to Tibet between 1929 and 1954, Orientalist Giuseppe Tucci brought a large number of thangkas to Italy. This important collection in the Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale “Guiseppe Tucci” in Rome was examined and restored by a team of Italian experts in the 1990s.
The Institute for Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna was able to contribute some analyses carried out as part of the long-standing Nako-Thangka project.
The now published publication Visibilia Invisibilium describes in numerous contributions the exclusively non-destructive analyses carried out on this important Tibetan cultural heritage.

The Bregenz painter Fritz Krcal (1888-1983) experimented with colour materials and painting techniques throughout his life. As a result, his works are characterised by unusual painting effects, but also show unusual ageing phenomena and damage that pose a special challenge for restorers.
The Fritz Krcal estate in the Vorarlberg State Museum comprises 1200 objects. The collection focuses on 400 paintings, which were used as examples for scientific studies of painting technique, an inventory to document the technological structure and condition, as well as model conservation-restoration work.

The author follows the forms of European (Western) fashion clothing from its roots in ancient Greece and Rome to the dominant Western world fashion. The interpretation of the costume forms is based on the realisation that fashionable silhouettes appear bound to the time in which they were created. The world and human image of a certain period must therefore be seen as shaping the silhouettes. Every fashionable silhouette has been written unmistakably with the signature of its time of origin. The present work is based on a targeted and orderly collection of pictorial costume material that the author has selected, added to, continuously expanded and reworked since 1962 to form a “Costume History of Europe”.

The presentation of the research results from Schönbrunn formed an essential part of the second international conference “The Conservation of East Asian Cabinets in Imperial Residences (1700-1900)” now published in this volume. Enriched by contributions from international and interdisciplinary experts – conservators and art historians and natural scientists – the reflection of this special topic revealed remarkable findings on the manufacture, provenance and conservation history of porcelain, lacquerware, paper and textile wall hangings as integral parts of baroque interiors not only in Schönbrunn but also in related sites in Europe and other parts of the world.

Von 2013 bis 2016 wurden im Rahmen der „Depotoffensive“ des Landes Niederösterreich die Sammlungen von sechs Klöstern und Regionalmuseen des Landes in den Blickpunkt gerückt. Als Konsulent und Partner für die Planung und Umsetzung diente das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien. Das Depot, das Herzstück einer jeden Sammlung, stellte das Zentrum der Aktivitäten dar. Ordnung und Übersicht wurden geschaffen, Inventare angelegt, Lager- und Pflegekonzepte umgesetzt, Objekte restauriert und die Bestände zugänglich gemacht. Neben praktischen Erfahrungen eröffnete die Depotoffensive zahlreiche Forschungsthemen in der Konservierungswissenschaft, der Sammlungspflege und an der Schnittstelle zur Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte.

The Nako temple complex with its earliest structures dating back to the 11th century is an extraordinary testimony of early Tibetan Buddhism not anymore preserved in today’s Tibet. Endangered by the rough environment, improper treatment and frequent earthquakes, the outstanding monuments were re-discovered by scholars from Austrian universities in the 1980s. The transdisciplinary research project carried out over more than 20 years led to in-depth studies, preservation and model-like conservation of the temples and their artworks.

Die Aufarbeitung der eigenen (Restaurier-)geschichte ist für die junge Disziplin der Konservierungswissenschaft zur Notwendigkeit geworden. Von seinen vielbeachteten wissenschaftlichen Expeditionen nach Tibet zwischen 1929 und 1954 brachte Orientalist Giuseppe Tucci eine große Zahl an Thangkas nach Italien. Diese bedeutende Sammlung im Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale „Guiseppe Tucci“ in Rom wurde in den 1990er Jahren von einem italienischen Expertenteam untersucht und restauriert.
Das Institut für Konservierung und Restaurierung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien konnte einige Analysen, die im Rahmen des langjährigen Nako-Thangka-Projekts durchgeführt wurden, beisteuern.
Die nun erschienene Publikation Visibilia Invisibilium beschreibt in zahlreichen Beiträgen die ausschließlich zerstörungsfrei durchgeführten Analysen an diesem bedeutenden tibetischen Kulturerbe.

Die weitgehend unbekannte Donaufelder Kirche in Wien-Floridsdorf, deren Bau 1905-14 im größten Industrieviertel Wiens als Manifest zum kirchlich-politischen Ordnungswillen in einer explosionsartig wachsenden Arbeitergemeinde gilt, steht im Zentrum.
Die Abhängigkeit zum Standort und zur Zielgruppe bestimmte die Gestaltung, die „semi-industriell“ gefertigte Ausstattung arbeitet mit der Faszination an neuen Technologien und Materialien: Zum Einsatz kamen Buntmetall-Legierungen in der Kunstform der getriebenen Blech-Skulptur sowie elektrische Beleuchtung als neuartiges gestalterisches Ausdrucksmittel der Jahrhundertwende. Die Arbeit steht im engen Zusammenhang mit der Restaurierung der Metallausstattung sowie der Rekonstruktion der historischen Lichtsituation  der Wiener Jugendstil-Kirche.

Der Bregenzer Maler Fritz Krcal (1888-1983) hat zeit seines Lebens mit Farbmaterial und Maltechnik experimentiert. Als Resultat zeichnen sich seine Werke durch ungewöhnliche maltechnische Effekte aus, weisen aber auch unübliche Alterungsphänomene und Schäden auf, die eine besondere Herausforderung für Restauratoren darstellen.
Der im Vorarlberger Landesmuseum befindliche Nachlass Fritz Krcals umfasst 1200 Objekte. 400 Gemälde bilden den Sammlungsschwerpunkt, anhand derer exemplarisch naturwissenschaftliche
Untersuchungen zur Maltechnik, eine Bestandsaufnahme zur Dokumentation des technologischen Aufbaus und Zustands, sowie modellhafte Konservierungen-Restaurierungen vorgenommen wurden.

Die Autorin folgt den Formen der europäischen (westlichen) Mode-Kleidung von ihren Wurzeln in der griechischen und römischen Antike bis zur beherrschenden westlichen Weltmode. Die Interpretation der Kostümformen basiert auf der Erkenntnis, dass sich die modischen Silhouetten an die Zeit gebunden darstellen, in der sie entstanden sind. Das Welt- und Menschenbild eines bestimmten Zeitabschnittes muss daher als silhouettenprägend angesehen werden. Jede modische Silhouette ist unverkennbar mit der Handschrift ihrer Entstehungszeit geschrieben worden. Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf einer gezielten und geordneten Sammlung von kostümbildlichem Bildmaterial, das die Autorin seit 1962 zu einer „Kostümgeschichte Europas“ ausgewählt, ergänzt, laufend erweitert und aufgearbeitet hat.
