/// INSTITUTE OF CONSERVATION

The preservation of art and artefacts is the focal point of conservation. The artistic and scientific area of study includes not only the practice of conservation, but also examination and analysis as well as the development and implementation of concepts for care and preservation.

Duration of the Course: 10 Semesters
Academic Degree: Magister/Magistra artium (Mag. art.)

The curriculum is arranged in two segments balanced between theory and hands-on practice. In all specialized areas of study, from the very beginning work is carried out on original artifacts from renowned public and private collections as well as from the Federal Office for the care of Monuments. The focus is on project oriented examination and analysis utilizing information of artistic techniques and technology with modern methodology within a framework of ethical considerations.

The first segment encompasses introductory semesters of the general practice of conservation. The second segment includes in-depth science and humanities courses, practical work in conservation as well as initial research in the chosen area of specialization.
The four specialty areas offered are grouped around the conservation and restoration of paintings, objects, textiles and stone. Additionally, students have the possibility to narrow their focus of conservation specialization, e.g. archaeological finds or contemporary art. Learning about methods for preventive care of artistic and cultural artifacts is an important feature in all the specialty areas, as is the development of long term preservation strategies for historic collections. Graduates of the programme will not only be equipped with the knowledge of their own areas of specialization but also with a basis for interdisciplinary work, especially in the field of preventive conservation.
